Lehigh University in Pennsylvania has had two players in the last 15 years taken in the top three rounds: right-hander Levi Stoudt, a Mariners' third-round pick in 2019, and catcher Matt McBride, an Indians supplemental second-round pick in 2006, who touched the big leagues. Black, who jumped on the map with a very strong Cape Cod League showing after his freshman year in 2019, has the combination of size and arm strength that should help him join that duo in July, though his stuff had backed up some as Lehigh’s Friday night starter in 2021.

The 6-foot-3 Black has shown one of the better fastballs, at least in terms of velocity, in the Draft class. He's thrown it in the 97-100 mph range and will hit 99 mph consistently in a one-inning look, with average life, but sat around 94 mph as a starter this spring. He can back it up with a hard 87-88 mph slider that flashes above-average but is inconsistent. It can be more cutter-like with some tumble to it but often doesn’t have late snap, and he had trouble commanding it in 2021. He will also mix in a fringy changeup.

In addition to the up-and-down secondary stuff, Black has had trouble finding the strike zone at times. His delivery will need some work, with too much effort even though he has a good, durable starting pitcher frame. A team taking him early could very well send him out as a starter and see if his secondary stuff and command can develop, but it’s possible he ends up in a bullpen when all is said and done.

Black became the highest-drafted pitcher in Lehigh history in 2021, when he went in the third round after breaking a 61-year-old school strikeout record with 95 in 72 1/3 innings and became the Mountain Hawks' first Patriot League pitcher of the year in 19 seasons. He climbed from Single-A to Triple-A in his first two years as a pro, then got called up to San Francisco on four separate occasions in 2024. He went 1-5 with a 6.44 ERA in nine outings with the Giants, blanking the Royals for 5 2/3 innings in late September for his lone victory. 

Black throws two variations of an average fastball and the velocity on his heater dipped in 2024 and hasn't bounced back. Both his two- and four-seamers sit around 93 mph and top out at 96. Neither his low-80s sweeping slider nor his mid-80s cutter have been as effective in 2025 as they were last season, leaving him without a better than average offering.

Though Black also possesses a fading upper-80s changeup, it's too firm and flat and he didn't elicit a single swing and miss with the 91 cambios he threw last season. He slings his pitches from a low three-quarters delivery with quality extension that gives him deception without costing him the ability to throw strikes. He's more of a back-of-the-rotation starter unless he regains some velocity and improves his command.

In 2021, Black broke Lehigh's 61-year-old strikeout record with 95 in 72 1/3 innings, won the Mountain Hawks' first Patriot League Pitcher of the Year Award in 19 seasons and became the highest-drafted pitcher in school history when the Giants popped him in the third round. Despite those accolades, his stuff and command regressed a bit during his final college season, but they've bounced back since he turned pro. He has thrived at four levels while advancing from Single-A to Triple-A in two full years as a pro, and he led the system among qualifiers in both K/BB ratio (2.98) and WHIP (1.21) in 2023. 

Black is a sinker/slider starter who relies on his two main pitches about 90 percent of the time. His fastball sits at 92-94 mph and tops out at 97, though he has reached 100 mph in shorter stints in the past. His slider parks at 82-85 mph with sweeping action and he'll occasionally turn it into a harder, tighter cutter. 

Though Black's sinking changeup gets too firm in the upper-80s and he doesn't trust it, he actually has had more success against lefties than righties in pro ball. He creates deception with the extension in his delivery and has thrown more strikes as a pro than he did in college. He has the highest floor among San Francisco's right-handed pitching prospects and projects as a durable No. 4 starter.

Black was more dominant in summer leagues than he was during three seasons at Lehigh, but he still became the highest-drafted pitcher in school history when the Giants popped him in 2021's third round. While his stuff and command regressed during his final year with the Mountain Hawks, neither was an issue during his 2022 pro debut. He needed just six weeks to earn a promotion from Single-A to High-A and posted a 136/36 K/BB ratio in 112 innings between the two levels. 

As a starter, Black sits at 93-96 mph and touches 98 with a fastball that features plenty of carry and some armside run, and he reached triple digits working shorter stints as an amateur. His mid-80s slider gives him a second plus pitch, combining power with plenty of sweep and some depth as well. His low-80s changeup is more of a work in progress but has some promising fade and could become an average offering if he uses it more often. 

Black creates a lot of deception with his delivery, throwing from a flat approach angle and using his 6-foot-3 frame to provide extension. He improved the consistency of his mechanics and strike-throwing in his first pro season, emerging as the best of the nine pitchers San Francisco took with its first nine picks in 2021. There's no reason to think he can't be a starter, but as a reliever he might have an upper-90s fastball and a wipeout slider.

The highest-drafted pitcher in Lehigh history (third round, 85th overall in 2021), Black had more success in summer college leagues than he did in three seasons with the Mountain Hawks. His stuff and command wavered in his final spring at Lehigh but that hasn't been an issue in his pro debut this year. He needed just eight starts in Single-A before earning a promotion and has continued to miss bats in High-A. 

Black's fastball reached triple digits when he worked short stints as an amateur and has sat at 94-97 mph with armside run and good carry in 2022. He's doing a better job of landing and creating shape on his mid-80s slider that often gives him a second plus offering. His fringy low-80s changeup has some fade but he has yet to display much trust or command with it. 

Black adds deception by throwing from a flat approach angle and using his 6-foot-3 frame to create extension. He has made some progress with smoothing out his delivery and locating his pitches early in his pro career, enhancing his chances of remaining in the rotation. He also could be a late-inning bullpen weapon if starting doesn't work out.
