Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Slider: 45 | Changeup: 40 | Control: 50 | Overall: 40

After graduating from San Marcos High School in California, Carr stayed in SoCal and headed to the University of San Diego as a two-way player. He redshirted after his freshman year in 2021, and after struggling and pitching sparingly in 2022, he transferred to Palomar Junior College. The left-hander has been one of the more productive JUCO pitchers in the country, helping him move up Draft boards in a hurry.

A bit undersized at 6-foot-1, Carr uses an overhead delivery to offer up a potential three-pitch mix. His fastball has been up to 97 mph this spring, sitting more frequently in the 90-94 range with some life up in the zone. His slurvy breaking ball is inconsistent but has some sweep when he stays on top of it and can miss bats, and his changeup is a third pitch he doesn’t use often that is behind the other two.

Carr has done a good job of throwing strikes this year and he’s athletic, still getting at-bats for Palomar this spring. Questions about durability -- he has a Tommy John surgery on his resume already -- and a lack of a third pitch have some thinking he’s best suited for the bullpen at the next level, though his left-handedness and arm strength will likely give him every chance to start out of the gate.

2024

Scouting grades: Fastball: 50 | Slider: 50 | Changeup: 45 | Control: 45 | Overall: 40

Carr had Tommy John surgery as a California high school senior in 2020 before redshirting at San Diego in his first college season and seeing brief action as a two-way player in his second. He pitched well in the Cape Cod League in the summer of 2022, then transferred to Palomar (Calif.) JC and became the top junior college prospect in the 2023 Draft after going 12-1 with a 2.31 ERA and 111/19 K/BB ratio in 78 innings. He bypassed a Texas Christian commitment after the Yankees selected him in the third round and will make his pro debut in 2024.

Carr's stuff has backed up in his first full pro season, and he has lost about 3 mph off his two- and four-seam fastballs, averaging around 90 mph and topping out at 94. He doesn't always stay on top of his slider, which has dipped in terms of both velocity and spin and now sits around 79 mph. His mid-80s changeup gets too firm and has only mild fade, so he doesn't trust it much.

Carr's athleticism and arm speed help him compensate for a lack of physicality. After filling the strike zone at Palomar, he has been more tentative in 2024. He'll need to improve his strength and polish to make it as a starter.

2023

Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Slider: 50 | Changeup: 45 | Control: 50 | Overall: 45

Coming off Tommy John surgery as a California high school senior, Carr redshirted in his first college season at San Diego in 2021 and saw brief action as a two-way player the following spring. After acquitting himself well as a pitcher in the Cape Cod League in the summer of 2022, he transferred to Palomar (Calif.) JC and became the top junior college prospect in this year's Draft. He went 12-1 with a 2.31 ERA and 111/19 K/BB ratio in 78 innings for the Comets, then gave up a Texas Christian commitment to sign with the Yankees for $692,000 as a third-rounder.

Carr regularly works at 91-95 mph and reaches 97 with his fastball, which features riding action up in the strike zone. His low-80s slider lacks consistency but can be a solid breaking ball with good sweep when he stays on top of it. He barely uses his changeup, which can get too firm in the upper 80s and has mild fade.

Though he lacks physicality at 6-foot-1 and 175 pounds, Carr makes up for it with athleticism and a quick arm. He repeats his delivery well and has no issues throwing strikes. If he can add some strength and polish, he could develop into a mid-rotation starter.
