Because he waited for bonus pools to reset with a new signing period rather than trying to latch on quickly after he defected from Cuba late in 2019, Jorge was able to get a franchise-record $2.8 million from the Rockies at the start of the 2022 international signing period. After hitting .320 with a .402 on-base percentage in the Dominican Summer League that year, he was initially slowed by a broken hamate during his United States debut, working his way to full-season ball last year where he hit a combined .306/.375/.421.
Long and lean, Jorge has shown a good feel for finding the barrel, with an approach that speaks to him being a bit more seasoned than many young players because of his time with the Cuban national team. He has a solid line-drive approach and can work counts and draw walks, but there hadn’t been too much impact in the early stages of his career. He’s starting to show little flashes of added strength and came to the Rockies' high performance camp to continue to work in that area, though the hope is he won’t start trying to hunt for power. There is some leverage in his swing, so a little might come naturally.
Jorge has good speed and instincts, which make him a dangerous asset on the basepaths. He also should be able to play shortstop for a very long time thanks to his agility and instincts, to go along with a solid arm, good footwork and steady hands. The ingredients are there for him to be a starting shortstop in the big leagues, with how much offensive impact he grows into key to determining his ceiling.

After defecting from Cuba late in 2019, Jorge waited until bonus pools reset to maximize his bonus. It paid off as he got a franchise-record $2.8 million from the Rockies to sign in January 2022 as one of the top prospects in the international signing class. He showed a very good feel for the game and hit .320/.402/.452 in his Dominican Summer League debut before coming to the United Sates for instructs.
Jorge’s time in international competition with the Cuban national team has certainly helped him acclimate to the pro game, having played in more games than a typical international signee. He has a very good feel at the plate and isn’t afraid to work counts, showing comfort in barreling up the baseball even when he’s behind. There is some extra-base power to tap into, but he needs to add strength and it’s unclear how much his super-narrow frame will support.
A combination of good speed and excellent instincts make Jorge dangerous on the bases, especially in things like going first-to-third. The instincts show up defensively as well, with a good chance of him sticking at shortstop, though he’s sure to see some time at second base as he embarks on his career stateside. He’s going to have to get stronger to impact the ball more to be a regular at one spot but has the skills and baseball IQ to at least be a utility type.

Jorge defected from Cuba in late 2019 and was declared eligible to sign a few months later. Because it was later on in the signing period, most teams didn’t have much bonus pool money left, so he waited for the next bonus period. The No. 15 prospect on MLB Pipeline’s Top 50 international prospects list, Jorge signed with the Rockies for $2.8 million, the largest international bonus in team history.
Now 19, Jorge brings a resume of international competition, having played shortstop for the Cuban national team in the 15-U Baseball Cup in Panama in 2018, with him as he embarks on his professional career. Many think Jorge should be able to stick at shortstop long-term, with good actions and instincts and where his baseball IQ allows his skills to shine. His excellent speed should help him on both sides of the ball, even if he has to change positions.
What kind of hitter Jorge will become remains to be seen. His feel for the game is apparent from the right side of the plate and he has a contact oriented approach geared for line drives. He’s wiry strong and should be able to add strength to his 6-foot-3 frame, giving him the chance to be a solid big league regular in time.

At 18, Dyan is eligible to sign and one of the oldest players on the market this year. He’s also one of the most experienced.
He was the shortstop for Cuba's team in the 15-U Baseball Cup in Panama in 2018 and honed his skills in his homeland. He defected from the island in late 2019 and was declared eligible to sign a few months later.
He’s continued to improve his game in the last year and added to his reputation as a solid defender and an all-around player that can excel at multiple facets of the game. Dyan’s upside and high baseball IQ combined to make him one of the most interesting prospects when he arrived on the market early in 2020 and his stock has increased since then.
Jorge trains in the Dominican Republic with Edwin "Ray" Castillo. The Rockies are the favorite to sign him.

Jorge reminds some scouts of Alexei Ramirez because of his size, lean build and overall athleticism. The teenager is considered by some evaluators as a defense-first type of prospect, but there are signs his bat will improve as he continues to develop and his body starts to fill out.
For now, Jorge displays a quick and compact swing with a solid approach at the plate. He can handle the bat well and is known primarily as a line-drive hitter. He projects to eventually hit anywhere between 10 to 12 home runs in the big leagues. Like some prospects, it might take Jorge time to adjust to the advanced pitching he will face in the United States.
What's certain is Jorge's ability to catch, run and throw. He has above-average potential in all three of those areas of his game. He is a solid defender that rarely makes a mistake. And while his physical tools don't always wow evaluators, his performances in games and ability to make key plays on defense or at the plate are hard to ignore. His upside and high baseball IQ combine to make him one of the most interesting prospects on the market.
The shortstop for Cuba's team in the 15-U Baseball Cup in Panama in 2018, Jorge defected from Cuba last October. He was declared a free agent by MLB on Feb. 7th and became eligible to sign. Jorge trains in the Dominican Republic with Edwin "Ray" Castillo and is represented by Barry Praver and Scott Shapiro at Magnus Sports. The Rockies are the favorite to sign him.
