As an amateur in Venezuela, Arteaga impressed scouts with his athleticism and defensive prowess, earning him a $1 million bonus in 2019. He led the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League with 43 RBIs in his 2021 pro debut, the Single-A California League with 136 hits and 35 doubles in 2022 and the High-A Northwest League with 49 extra-base hits at age 20 last year. His slash line did drop to a career-worst .235/.299/.410 in 2023 and he'll miss the first half of this season following surgery to alleviate thoracic outlet syndrome.
A no-doubt shortstop built along the lines of Elvis Andrus, Arteaga has smooth actions, range to both sides, quick hands and plus arm strength. He's capable of providing web gems and is getting more consistent at executing routine plays. In Baseball America's annual manager surveys, he was rated as the best defensive shortstop in the Cal and Northwest Leagues the past two summers.
Arteaga has the hand-eye coordination to be an average hitter, but he chases too many pitches and piles up strikeouts in pursuit of power. He does have more pop than initially expected and his combination of bat speed, sneaky strength and ability to launch balls to his pull side could translate into 15-20 homers per year from the right side of the plate. He possesses average to solid speed and will steal an occasional base.

Arteaga's father played basketball professionally in Venezuela and handed down his quick-twitch athleticism to his son, who signed for $1 million in 2019. Better known for his defense when he turned pro, he has provided more offense than initially expected. He batted .276/.350/.450 in his first two seasons, leading the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League with 43 RBIs in his 2021 pro debut and topping the Single-A California League with 136 hits and 35 doubles last year at age 19.
Arteaga's glove has been as good as advertised and there's no doubt that he'll be a standout shortstop. With smooth actions, range to both sides, quick hands and a plus arm, he's equipped to make all the plays. In a Baseball America survey of Cal League managers last summer, they rated him the best defensive shortstop (over Top 100 prospects Edwin Arroyo and Adael Amador) and the best infield arm on the circuit.
Despite an aggressive approach, Arteaga repeatedly barrels balls from the right side of the plate thanks to his hand-eye coordination. With his bat speed, deceptive strength and ability to launch balls in the air, he could deliver 20 homers per season in his prime. He has solid speed and is still learning the nuances of base stealing.

The Giants invested heavily in Venezuelan shortstops on the 2019 international market, giving their two biggest bonuses to Arteaga ($1 million) and Anthony Rodriguez ($800,000). Arteaga's father player professional basketball in Venezuela and passed his quick-twitch athleticism to his son. Better known for his defense, he showed surprising power in his 2021 pro debut, leading the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League in RBIs (43) while ranking second in extra-base hits (22) and total bases (99) and third in homers (nine).
Despite his ACL slugging exploits, Arteaga still stands out most as a no-doubt shortstop. He has smooth actions and plenty of range, as well as the fast hands and plus arm strength to get rid of throws quickly and make them from a variety of angles. He also has fine instincts that allow him to get the most out of his tools.
Arteaga has an aggressive approach but has the bat-to-ball skills to get away with it, repeatedly barreling balls and displaying a knack for launching them in the air. More advanced pitchers may force him to be selective, and his quick right-handed stroke should help him adapt. He's also a plus runner with some basestealing aptitude, giving him 20-20 upside.

The Giants concentrated on Venezuelan shortstops in their 2019 international class, paying their two highest bonuses to Arteaga ($1 million) and Anthony Rodriguez ($800,000). A quality defender, Arteaga inherited his athleticism from his father, who played professional basketball in Venezuela. The coronavirus pandemic wiped out plans for his pro debut in 2020, when his participation was restricted to San Francisco's Dominican instructional league program.
A no-doubt shortstop, Arteaga stands out most with his defensive ability. His quickness and instincts give him plenty of range, and he has the fast hands and solid arm strength to get rid of the ball quickly and make any throw needed. If he doesn't provide enough offense to become a regular, he has the tools to play all over the diamond in a utility role.
There aren't concerns about Arteaga's bat, however, because he has an easy right-handed stroke that allows him to make regular contact. With his ability to square up balls and his projectable strength, he has more pop than the Giants initially realized and homered seven times in the first month of his 2021 debut. His plus speed will help him get on base and be a threat to steal.

The Giants paid the two largest bonuses in their 2019 international class to Venezuelan shortstops, $1 million for Arteaga and $800,000 for Anthony Rodriguez. The latter may have more offensive potential, but Arteaga is a superior defender and no slouch at the plate. He inherits his athleticism from his father, who played professional basketball in Venezuela.
Arteaga has the tools required to stick at shortstop and be an asset there. His quickness and instincts allow him to gobble up plenty of ground balls, and he also fast hands and solid arm strength to make all of the necessary throws. If he doesn't hit enough to become a regular, he's athletic enough to play all over the diamond in a utility role.
Arteaga should hit enough, however, because he makes consistent contact with an easy right-handed swing. His ability to barrel balls and his projectable strength could translate into 15 or more homers per season. His plus speed should help him reach base and steal a few bases.
