Floyd showed top-three-rounds upside as a Georgia high schooler, but an inconsistent and shortened senior season left him undrafted in 2020 and headed to Louisiana State. Eligible again last year as a sophomore, he once again flashed talent but not regularly enough for a team to meet his asking price and went unpicked. He continued to intrigue scouts despite an up-and-down spring as a full-time starter, and he came up big in his final outing, tying a College World Series nine-inning record with 17 strikeouts in the finals against Florida.
Floyd's fastball sat at 91-94 mph and topped out at 97 last spring, ticked up a couple of notches during the fall and is enhanced by quality induced vertical break and high spin rates that produce difficult carry up in the zone. He unveiled a more reliable breaking ball in the fall with a low-80s slider with depth that's superior to his downer mid-70s curveball. He also owns a low-80s changeup with fade but doesn't use it very often.
More physical than athletic, Floyd has a quick arm and generates velocity with relative ease. He could be a No. 4 starter at the big league level if he can refine his secondary pitches and throw them for strikes more often. If he can't, then he profiles as a fastball-heavy reliever.

A solid prospect when he pitched for his Georgia high school, Floyd went on to Louisiana State after he wasn’t taken in the shortened 2020 Draft. He pitched well out of the Tigers’ bullpen as a freshman and showed flashes -- albeit inconsistently -- in a Draft-eligible sophomore year, and came back to campus when he went unselected a second time. He was a full-time starter in 2023 with mixed results, though he tied a College World Series nine-inning record with 17 strikeouts in the finals against Florida. The Reds took him No. 38 overall and signed him for $2.1 million.
As was the case with all the college arms the Reds took in 2023, Floyd didn’t throw a competitive pitch after signing, and he didn’t throw one for all of 2024 either as shoulder surgery ended his year before it began. His fastball velocity had ticked up from 2022 to 2023, when he averaged 94 mph and topped out at 98. The pitch plays up because of its induced vertical break and high spin rates that produce carry up in the zone. His newer low-80s slider has good depth, and he relies on it more than his upper-70s curve. There’s feel for a fading low-80s changeup, but he doesn’t mix it in that often.
With a quick arm and easy velocity, Floyd has the stuff to remain a starter in the middle-to-back of a big league rotation. He’ll need to refine his command while tightening up his secondary offerings and landing them for strikes more consistently. He has a pretty high floor as a reliever who relies on his fastball if starting doesn’t work out, but the first order of business will be to get him on a mound for healthy, competitive innings.

The top pitcher in Louisiana State's recruiting class, Floyd is one of the more athletic pitchers in the 2020 Draft but is also very much a work in progress. Scouts thought he had a chance to go in the first two rounds entering the year, though continued inconsistency during the brief high school season may make it difficult to take him high enough to divert him from Baton Rouge.
Floyd has a quick arm that generates 90-95 mph fastballs, getting swings and misses up in the strike zone with riding action. He'll show glimpses of a solid curveball but it's not reliable yet, often degenerating into more of a slurve. He hasn't had much need for a changeup to this point, so it lags behind his other offerings.
Floyd's delivery features some effort and recoil that detract from his fastball command. In order to pay him enough to lure him away from LSU, a club will have to bank that his athleticism will allow him to clean up his mechanics and polish his repertoire. It's quite possible that he winds up attending college and develops into one of the top arms in the 2023 Draft.
