Arizona high school powerhouse Hamilton High School has had a number of players get drafted and a few make it to the big leagues, headlined by the Dodgers’ Cody Bellinger. Bellinger is the most recent to be taken in the top five rounds (2013, fourth round), but Hamilton could very well have another in Selvidge, the top prep talent in the state.
Athletic and strong, this high school lefty has some serious arm strength and speed that should be attractive to a number of teams. He’s up to 96 mph with his fastball, sitting comfortably at 90-92 mph, throwing it with armside run. He’s learned to manipulate his heater a bit more, with some sink. He’ll throw his slider 79-84 mph as his best secondary offering, with three-quarter type tilt, though it can get slurvy at times without hard bite. He has a get-me-over kind of curve that’s a work in progress, with some scouts feeling he’d be better off focusing on the slider only. He has a changeup, but doesn’t throw it a ton.
Selvidge likes to go right after hitters with his power stuff and will have to refine his overall command, though he is athletic enough to feel there will be at least average control in the future. Teams that believe that and in his starting pitcher profile could take him early enough to sign him away from his LSU commitment and be the earliest an Arizona high schooler has been taken since fellow southpaw Matthew Liberatore was a first-rounder in 2018.

After his stuff and strikes went backward during his senior season as an Arizona high schooler in 2021, Selvidge helped himself more than anyone at the inaugural MLB Draft Combine that June. He threw three shutout innings, interviewed well and worked his way into the third round and a well over-slot $1.5 million bonus. He repeated Rookie ball as his stuff regressed in 2022, then bounced back last year to earn Single-A Florida State League All-Star honors and pitched well in High-A.
Selvidge struggled in 2021 when his high school coach changed his mechanics and found more success when he returned to his previous delivery, but he saw his fastball drop to 87-91 mph and his slider flatten out in his first full year as a pro. They rebounded in 2023, with his heater sitting at 92-95 mph and touching 97 and his low-80s slide piece regaining its shape. Both are solid offerings, as is an 85-89 mph cutter that he picked up last year.
Selvidge also has a low-80s changeup with fade but hasn't been able to land it for strikes consistently. His athleticism helps him repeat his clean delivery easily, giving him average control and command. He's a tough competitor who could begin to move quickly and develop into a mid-rotation starter.

After Selvidge put himself into top-two-rounds consideration with his performance on the 2020 summer showcase circuit, his stock dropped when his stuff and control regressed during his Arizona high school senior season the next spring. He rebounded with a strong performance at the inaugural Draft Combine in June 2021, working three shutout innings and impressing teams during interview sessions, leading the Yankees to spend a third-round pick and a well-over-slot $1.5 million bonus on him. His stuff backed up again when he repeated Rookie ball in 2022 but has bounced back this year as he has thrived at two Class A levels.
Selvidge struggled in 2021 when his high school coach changed his delivery and found success again when he returned to his previous mechanics, displaying a 91-95 mph fastball and a low-80s slider. His fastball dipped to 87-91 mph and his slider flattened out last season before rebounding in 2023, when he also has added a solid 85-89 mph cutter. He's working on a low-80s changeup with encouraging fade.
Selvidge's athleticism and clean delivery result in quality control and at least average command. He compiled a 2.95 ERA in the Florida Complex League last summer, a testament to his ability to compete without his best stuff. There's still some projection remaining in his 6-foot-3 frame, so he could continue to improve his arsenal.

Selvidge established himself as a top-two-rounds talent on the 2020 summer showcase circuit, then saw his stock dip when his stuff and control regressed last spring. But he helped himself more than any other player at the inaugural MLB Draft Combine in June, pitching three scoreless innings and wowing teams in interviews. The Yankees selected the Arizona prep product in the third round and lured him away from a Louisiana State commitment with a well over-slot $1.5 million bonus.
Selvidge struggled after his high school coach changed his mechanics but regained his quality stuff once he went back to his previous delivery. His fastball bounced back to the low 90s and touched 95 again, while his slider returned to the low 80s and was sharper as well. He's beginning to learn a changeup with promising fade and velocity separation from his heater.
With his athleticism and clean delivery, Selvidge should have at least average control and command. His stuff could add more power as he fills out his projectable 6-foot-3 frame and he's already starting to add strength. He impressed with his performance and work ethic during instructional league, fueling hopes that he can become a mid-rotation starter.

No player helped himself more at the inaugural MLB Draft Combine in June than Selvidge. After establishing himself as a top-two-rounds talent the previous summer on the showcase circuit, he damaged his stock with inconsistent stuff and control as an Arizona prep senior. He looked like his vintage self during three shutout innings at the combine, which helped him earn a well-over-slot $1.5 million bonus in the third round.
His high school coach altered Selvidge's delivery during the spring, and when he reverted to his former mechanics, he once again sat in the low 90s and hit 95 mph with his fastball with little effort. His low-80s slider regained its power and sharpness as well. He didn't use his changeup much as an amateur but it shows promising fade and velocity separation from his heater.
While Selvidge had issues throwing strikes during the spring, his athleticism and clean delivery should lead to at least average control in the future. There's still some projection remaining in his 6-foot-3 frame, giving him the upside of a mid-rotation starter.
