Scouting Report

2024

Scouting grades: Hit: 40 | Power: 50 | Run: 40 | Arm: 50 | Field: 40 | Overall: 40

His father Wilton, uncle Fernando Tatis Sr. and cousin Fernando Tatis Jr. all reached the big leagues, and Veras could do the same in the next couple of years. Signed for $200,000 out of the Dominican Republic in 2019, he topped the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League with a .949 OPS in his pro debut two years later. He finished strong after a promotion to Double-A last August, hitting .309/.346/.533 with six homers in the final six weeks as one of the youngest players (age 20) in the Southern League.

Veras possesses some of the best raw power and one of the most aggressive approaches in the system. He has a quick right-handed swing and huge strength that provide pop to all fields and 30-homer upside, though his lack of selectivity also leads to a lot of strikeouts and rolled-over grounders. He whiffed nearly five times as much as he walked in his first two years in full-season ball and hasn't met a pitch he won't chase out of the zone.

Veras spent his two pro seasons on the infield corners, but he had limited range and the game sped up too much on him at third base. He has below-average speed and doesn't cover much ground in right field, but his average to solid arm is an asset there. He threw out 10 runners in 101 starts in right last season.

2023

Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 50 | Run: 40 | Arm: 50 | Field: 45 | Overall: 40

Veras has extensive baseball bloodlines as father Wilton, uncle Fernando Tatis Sr. and cousin Fernando Tatis Jr. all have played in the big leagues and cousin Elijah Tatis is a fellow White Sox infield prospect. Signed for $200,000 out of the Dominican Republic in 2019, Veras has some of the best raw power in the system. He led the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League with a .949 OPS in his 2021 pro debut, ranked fourth in the Single-A Carolina League with 17 homers last season and went deep three times in 12 Double-A games as a part of the organization's Project Birmingham.

Veras has well-above-average raw power, the product of bat speed, strength and an aggressive right-handed swing. While he can crush fastballs, his pull-happy mindset leaves him vulnerable to breaking pitches and results in too many rolled-over ground balls. He posted a 132/30 K/BB ratio in his first full season, further underscoring his eventual need to tone down his approach against more advanced pitching.

Veras has below-average quickness and average arm strength, which limits his defensive utility. He divided his first two pro seasons between first base, where he's a fringy defender with limited range, and third base, where the game speeds up too much on him and his tools aren't good fits. He has spent 2023 playing an adequate right field and showing a knack for throwing out runners who challenge him.

2022

Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 50 | Run: 40 | Arm: 50 | Field: 45 | Overall: 40

Veras has three relatives who played in the big leagues -- father Wilton, uncle Fernando Tatis Sr. and cousin Fernando Tatis Jr. -- and another cousin, Elijah Tatis, is a fellow White Sox infield prospect. Veras signed out of the Dominican Republic for $200,000 in 2019 and is one of the more impressive young hitters in the system. He topped the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League with a .949 OPS in his pro debut last summer and is battling for the Single-A Carolina League home run crown this year.

Veras produces plus raw power from the right side of the plate with a combination of bat speed and strength. He has aggressive approach and is looking to drive more balls during his second season as a pro, and his plate discipline has suffered as a result. He hammers fastballs but is vulnerable to breaking pitches and will need to make adjustments when he faces more advanced pitching.

A below-average runner with average arm strength, Veras has good instincts but is limited defensively. He split time between first and third base in his pro debut, but it's a stretch to say he could become adequate at the hot corner. He has a chance to become an average defender at first, but he'll need his bat to carry him to the big leagues.
