Signed for $200,000 out of the Dominican Republic by the Diamondbacks in 2019, De Los Santos burst onto the prospect scene three years later by winning the Single-A California League batting title (.329) and mashing 22 homers between three levels. His subsequent struggles in the Arizona Fall League after the 2022 season and in Double-A at the start of last year prompted Arizona to put him on the development list for the first two weeks of July so he could rework his right-handed swing. Though he batted .322/.340/.596 afterward, the D-backs left him unprotected on their 40-man roster, and the Guardians pounced on him in the Rule 5 Draft in December. Returned to Arizona in March, he moved on to the Marlins in a July deal for A.J. Puk.
With raw power and exit velocities that rank among the best in the Minors, De Los Santos offers huge power potential thanks to his bat speed and strength but won't come close to fully tapping into it unless he can tone down his approach. Arizona tried to simplify his load and give him more time to make better swing decisions, yet despite his improved performance, he still chased way too many pitches and produced too many ground balls. Even with his flaws, he led the Minors in homers (28), total bases (217) and RBIs (84) at the time of the trade.
De Los Santos played mostly third base in his first three pro seasons but lacks the tools to stay there. With below-average speed and quickness, average arm strength and a history of erratic play at the hot corner, he'll likely wind up at first base. He has spent the majority of his time at first in 2024, but Miami's current roster construction may mean his first big league opportunity comes at third.

Signed by the Diamondbacks for $200,000 out of the Dominican Republic in 2019, De Los Santos broke out by winning the Single-A California League batting title (.329) and hitting .306/.348/.499 with 22 homers between three levels in 2022. He struggled in the Arizona Fall League during the offseason and in Double-A at the beginning of 2023 before rallying in the second half. When Arizona didn't protect him on its 40-man roster, the Guardians pounced on him in the Rule 5 Draft.
Because of the way he’s able to get into his lower half and dig into his strength, De Los Santos has the near-top-of-the-scale raw power that ranks among the best in all of the Minor Leagues, and he has the elite exit velocities to match. He can get overly aggressive at times, and more advanced pitchers can take advantage, particularly through the use of softer stuff. But he could help fill a glaring need in a Guardians organization that finished last in the Majors in homers in 2023 and doesn't have many sluggers in its system.
The odds are against De Los Santos remaining at third base, where he's an erratic defender who lacks quickness and features just average arm strength. A below-average runner, he also may lose a step or two as he continues to fill out, and that definitely would push him over to first base. The Guardians won't be able to send him to the Minors in 2024 without first exposing him to waivers and offering him back to the Diamondbacks for half of his $100,000 Rule 5 price.

De Los Santos put his enticing offensive skill set on full display as he slashed .417/.500/.792 over 28 plate appearances for the Dominican Republic at the 2018 U-15 World Cup. He signed with the D-backs for $200,000 in July 2019 and got off to a fast start in his professional career. A 62-game sample size split between Rookie ball and Low-A is too small to make any sweeping declarations, but the D-backs were certainly pleased to see De Los Santos hit .295/.370/.489 with eight homers in his 2021 debut.
While there’s some swing-and-miss in his game and his approach needs work, there’s no denying De Los Santos’ power. Listed at 6-foot-1 and 185 pounds, the teenager may already have more raw power than any other prospect in Arizona’s system. De Los Santos makes good use of his strong lower half and drives the ball to all fields while generating plus exit velocities from the right side of the plate.
De Los Santos moves well for someone his size, giving the organization hope he’ll be able to stick at third base. However, there remains a chance he outgrows the position and has to move across the diamond to first. He’s made strides defensively since signing, showing soft hands and an above-average arm to go with improving footwork. The power bat will ultimately be De Los Santos’ ticket to the Majors, where he profiles as a middle-of-the-order slugger.
