Scouting Report

2025

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 45 | Run: 40 | Arm: 45 | Field: 40 | Overall: 40

Following two subpar seasons at South Carolina, Milone transferred to Oregon in 2022 and transformed into a different hitter by earning first-team All-Pac-12 honors as a junior after hitting .337/.405/.545 with 12 home runs in 60 games. The A’s took note of this revelation, selecting him in the sixth round of the 2022 Draft. Since joining the organization, he has quickly climbed up the prospect radar. He spent 2024 at Double-A Midland and hit .278/.361/.441 with 15 homers, 29 doubles and 70 RBIs in 120 games.

The A’s initially figured they would have to tweak Milone’s mechanics at the plate given his unconventional setup and swing, but his production thus far at every level has led them to allow him to stick with what is working for him. His power numbers have been decent to this point, and he draws a good amount of walks and has solid bat-to-ball skills to round out an overall solid approach at the plate.

Defense has always been the big question mark surrounding Milone. The A’s have tried giving him looks all around the infield, and while they plan to keep him versatile, first base is likely going to be where he ends up. Regardless of position, hitting is what got him this far, and the bat is what will take him to the Majors one day if his offensive output continues as he advances through the system.

2024

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 45 | Run: 40 | Arm: 45 | Field: 40 | Overall: 40

Transferring cross-country from South Carolina to Oregon in 2022, Milone earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors as a junior by hitting .337/.405/.545 with 12 homers in 60 games. That performance led to the A’s selecting him in the sixth round of the 2022 Draft. During his first full season of pro ball last year, he catapulted himself up the prospect radar by combining to hit .285/.398/.488 with 17 homers, 28 doubles and 72 RBIs in 114 games between Single-A Stockton and High-A Lansing.

Milone’s setup and swing are a bit unconventional, but it has worked for him so far as a pro, so the A’s have no plans to tinker with his hitting mechanics for the time being. His good bat-to-ball skills lead to some homers and are part of an overall solid approach that also includes the ability to draw a ton of walks.

Not considered strong with the glove by any means, Milone’s biggest question mark is figuring out his spot on defense. He was mostly a DH at Oregon, and while the A’s have given him looks at second and third base, it seems like first is his best shot if he’s going to play anywhere on the field, which puts more pressure on his bat to continue shining as he progresses through the system.

2023

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 45 | Run: 40 | Arm: 45 | Field: 40 | Overall: 40

Milone was in the top 100 of MLB Pipeline’s Top 200 Draft prospects list as a Georgia prepster in 2029, but because of a strong commitment to South Carolina he wasn't selected until Round 28. After two years of subpar performances as a Gamecock, he transferred across the country to the University of Oregon, where he hit .337/.405/.545 to earn first-team all-Pac-12 honors. He landed in the sixth round of the 2022 Draft, where he signed for a blow-slot $200,000. He responded with a strong first full season across two levels of A ball, finishing with a .285/.398/.488 line to go along with 17 homers.

Ever since his high school days, Milone has shown some ability from the right side of the plate, even if it took a move to the Pacific Northwest for it to show up in college. He has a solid approach, drawing a ton of walks (14.8 percent in 2023) while making a lot of solid contact (18.9 percent K rate). He can drive the ball with some impact and runs into some home runs because of his bat-to-ball skills.

While there might be some conviction in the bat, there have been questions about Milone’s defensive home since his college days. He largely served as Oregon’s DH, and while he’s seen time at second and third base, his only real chance to play in the field regularly is likely going to be at first, which puts more pressure on his bat to be productive.

Not to be confused with Brennan Malone, a Florida high school right-hander who's a potential first-rounder, Milone is one of the best prep hitters available. He flew under the radar a bit because he wasn't selected for many top showcase events last summer, though he did make his presence felt at the World Wood Bat Association World Championship in October. He has built off that momentum this spring and could factor in the top three rounds.

Milone has a sweet right-handed swing and advanced feel for manipulating the barrel. He has added strength and his bat looks quicker this spring, giving him at least average power potential despite a lack of physicality. Most of his pop presently comes to his pull side, and there could be more to come if he adds more muscle and more loft to his stroke.

A shortstop in high school, Milone projects best defensively at third base. He has the hands and instincts to stay on the dirt, though he has below-average speed and an average arm with inconsistent accuracy. He does have a good first step, and some scouts would try him at second base while others wonder if he might wind up in left field.
