Scouting Report

2024

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 45 | Run: 50 | Arm: 50 | Field: 45 | Overall: 40

Paulino turned 16 the same day the 2018 international signing period opened, and he celebrated by turning pro for $205,000 out of the Dominican Republic. He made his U.S. debut by batting .336 in the Rookie-level Florida Complex League in 2021 and led the Single-A Carolina League in doubles (35), triples (10), extra-base hits (58) and total bases (217). He made the jump to full-season ball the following year, and his numbers weren't as big in 2023 but he held his own in High-A at age 20 and helped Greenville win the South Atlantic League championship. He was a solid performer at Double-A Portland to begin 2024 and was traded to the Blue Jays in a four-player deal involving Danny Jansen at the Trade Deadline.

Paulino has the ingredients to hit for average: a pretty left-handed swing, fine hand-eye coordination and more discipline than most players his age. But he hasn't been able to add much muscle to his slight 5-foot-10 frame, so his quality of contact dipped against better pitching last year. His hitting ability should enable him to tap into most of his average raw power, so he could deliver 15 or more homers per season if he gets stronger.

Though he has just average speed, Paulino can steal bags, though he became less efficient at that skill in 2024. Almost half of his starts last year came at shortstop, though he has fringy range there and his arm stands out more for its accuracy than its strength. He also saw action at second base (his best position) and third (where his arm is a bit light), and he played briefly in center field in 2022.

2023

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 45 | Run: 50 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 40

Paulino celebrated his 16th birthday in 2018 by signing with the Red Sox for $205,000 out of the Dominican Republic. His best attribute was his pure hitting ability, and that has translated into a .281/.377/.468 slash line through his first three pro seasons. He made his full-season debut at age 19 last year and led the Single-A Carolina League in doubles (35), triples (10), extra-base hits (58) and total bases (217).

After recognizing pitches well and repeatedly making good swing decisions in 2022, Paulino has been less patient and productive in High-A. His sweet left-handed stroke and fine hand-eye coordination should allow him to make consistent contact, but he has regressed and has been feeble against southpaws. There are some questions about his lack of physicality and how much power he'll have, though he should have the hitting ability to get to most of his raw pop and produce at least 15 homers per season.

Paulino plays faster than his average speed on the bases thanks to his instincts and aggressive nature. Signed as a shortstop, he started games there and at second and third base, and left and center field in 2022. With his average quickness and arm strength along with his hit-over-power profile, he fits best at the keystone.

2022

Scouting grades: Hit: 55 | Power: 45 | Run: 50 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 45

Paulino turned 16 on the day the 2018 international signing period opened, and he celebrated by turning pro with the Red Sox for $205,000 out of the Dominican Republic. His biggest selling point was his pure hitting ability, which was evident when he batted .336/.436/.549 as a 19-year-old in the Rookie-level Florida Complex League making his U.S. debut last summer. Originally signed as a shortstop, he moved to third and second base in the FCL to accommodate slicker defenders Marcelo Mayer and Brainer Bonaci.

Paulino is built to hit for average with a smooth left-handed stroke, fine hand-eye coordination and advanced pitch recognition and swing decisions for a teenager. He makes a lot of contact but also shows the ability to work walks. Though he didn't homer in his first two pro summers, he did have 20 extra-base hits in 36 FCL games and his bat speed and ability to barrel balls could produce 15 or more homers annually once he adds some much-need strength.

An average runner, Paulino displays good instincts on the bases. He has reliable hands and some twitchy athleticism but his quickness and average arm strength are a bit stretched at shortstop. He profiles best as an offensive second baseman and also might see some outfield action to enhance his versatility.
