Scouting Report

2026

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 40 | Run: 55 | Arm: 45 | Field: 60 | Overall: 40

The last New Hampshire high schooler to make it to the big leagues was outfielder Ryan McKenna, an Orioles fourth-rounder back in 2015. Carey, who was a two-sport star in the Granite State (hockey), signed with the Braves for $150,000 as a 15th-round pick in the 2024 Draft and opened eyes with a very solid first full season of pro ball, playing all year with Single-A Augusta.

Especially for a teenager from New England, Carey showed off a good feel to hit from the left side of the plate. He displayed excellent contact skills during his first full season, striking out less than 16 percent of the time, with a smooth stroke. He hit the ball on the ground too often, but there’s a feel for loft and raw power for him to tap into, even if it hasn’t shown up yet. He uses a leg kick that can help him get the ball in the air to his pull side, but there hasn’t been any resulting in-game production in-game yet.

Carey will have to find a way to elevate consistently and do more damage in order for him to fit a corner-outfield profile. He’s a good defensive outfielder who saw time at all three spots and has above-average speed, but he probably doesn’t have the chops to play center field regularly, putting a bit more pressure on the power to materialize at some point during his development.

2025

Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 55 | Run: 55 | Arm: 45 | Field: 60 | Overall: 40

The first player ever selected straight out of Londonderry HS in New Hampshire (three-time All-Star Brian Wilson also attended school there before going the college route), Carey was also a standout hockey player during his amateur career. That hard-nosed attitude put him on the Braves’ radar during the 2024 Draft and they handed him a $150,000 signing bonus in the 15th round to forgo his Rutgers commitment. Young for his class, Carey made Atlanta's 2025 Spring Breakout roster and then played the entirety of his first pro campaign with Single-A Augusta, where he collected a 102 wRC+ and Carolina League-high 121 hits in 117 games.

Carey’s a left-handed hitter who displays solid contact skills and above-average raw pop, although the Braves are waiting for the latter to materialize in game action. He has a healthy leg kick that helps him drive the ball in the air -- particularly to his pull side -- but he went deep just four times all season, including twice in his final eight games. The ground-ball rate (49.3 percent) ran high but he has a smooth stroke and a feel for loft that provides optimism it’ll come down with more reps.

Viewed as an above-average defender, Carey saw significant time at all three outfield spots in this past year. He uses that athletic background to his advantage both on the grass and the basepaths, where he swiped 17 bags (albeit on 27 tries) during his debut season. He’ll still be just 19 years old for most of his second campaign in pro ball, giving him significant time to develop his exciting skill set as he makes his way up the ladder.
