Scouting Report

2026

The son of legendary slugger Mark McGwire, Mason signed with the Cubs as a 2022 eighth-rounder out of a California high school. He struggled to throw strikes in his first two pro seasons before missing all of 2025 with a partial elbow tear that didn't require surgery. He has returned this year with improved stuff and control, earning a promotion to High-A in late May.

McGwire's most effective pitch is a 78-82 mph curveball with downer break, though he only throws it about 10 percent of the time. He leans heavily on a 92-96 mph fastball that tops out at 99 with carry and armside run. A decent upper-80s slider with tight break is his most-used secondary offering, and he dabbles with a mid-80 splitter as a change of pace.

McGwire works out of a simple delivery with good extension and a low release height that provide deception. After walking 17 percent of the batters he faced in his first two years as a pro, he has halved that rate in 2026. His improved control and command enhance his chances of becoming a back-of-the-rotation starter.
