Scouting Report

2020

Though he didn’t pitch as a Rice sophomore due to a shoulder injury, Duplantier performed well during a healthy junior campaign in 2016, when the D-backs took him in the third round. An elbow issue limited the right-hander during his pro debut, but he put it behind him and led the Minors in ERA (1.39) while pitching across two levels and attending the Futures Game in his first full season. However, Duplantier’s injury woes returned in 2018, with the right-hander missing time due to right biceps tendinitis, and while he did pitch in the big leagues in ’19, he also was sidelined for about a month with shoulder inflammation in the middle of the season.

Duplantier’s fastball sat 93-95 and touched 96 mph in the 2018 Arizona Fall League, but across 36 2/3 innings with Arizona last season, he averaged 92 mph with both his two- and four-seam fastballs. He also struggled with his command, issuing 4.4 walks-per-nine in the big leagues and 6.5 BB/9 in the Minors. His low-80s slider and upper-70s curveball are effective pitches when he’s able to pitch off of his fastball, and he has enough feel to mix in a fringy changeup.

The diminished velocity and control problems validated some scouts’ concerns about Duplantier’s delivery and arm action that date back to his college days and he spent the second half of the season working to clean up and improve his mechanics. After shuffling him between the rotation and the bullpen, the D-backs intend to deploy Duplantier as a starter in 2020 with the hope that he will get back in the more defined role.

7/19: Duplantier reinstated from IL

A shoulder injury that kept him out for his entire sophomore season at Rice hurt Duplantier's stock leading into the 2016 Draft despite a healthy junior campaign. Those concerns weren't assuaged when he threw just one inning in his pro debut due to elbow soreness, but he took a huge step toward erasing doubts with a dominant and healthy first full season that saw him lead the Minors in ERA (1.39) while pitching across two levels and attending the Futures Game. He was shelved for an extended period in 2018 with right biceps tendinitis that limited him to just 67 innings in Double-A, but made up for lost time with an impressive performance in the Arizona Fall League. Duplantier made his big league debut early in the 2019 season, tossing three scoreless innings out of the bullpen to record a save.

Duplantier's fastball usually sits in the 93-95 mph range, but he can reach back for more when needed. He throws it with sink and run, making him effective both at getting ground-ball outs and missing bats. His slider is at least above average and represents his best secondary offering, thrown with power, at 85-87 mph, and late biting action that nets him whiffs and is especially lethal against righties. He also throws an effective curveball in the low 80s and has feel for a mid-80s changeup, though he'll need to refine the latter to neutralize left-handed hitters. He's around the strike zone with his entire four-pitch mix.

The strong and athletic Duplantier has helped remake his delivery with remarkable success, but concerns likely will persist on account of his arm action and low three-quarters slot. If he can stay healthy, Duplantier's combination of athleticism, stuff and command point to a ceiling of a mid-rotation starter.

A shoulder injury that kept him out for his entire sophomore season combined with the track record of pitchers coming out of Rice hurt Duplantier's stock leading into the 2016 Draft despite a healthy junior campaign. Those concerns weren't assuaged when he threw just one inning in his pro debut due to elbow soreness, but he took a huge step toward erasing doubts with a dominant and healthy first full season that saw him lead the Minors in ERA while pitching across two levels and attending the Futures Game. Some of those questions resurfaced a bit, though, when he was shelved for an extended period in 2018 with arm fatigue.

Strong and athletic, Duplantier has helped remake his delivery with remarkable success. While his fastball usually sits in the 92-94 mph range, he can reach back for more when needed. He throws it with sink and run and was as effective in getting ground-ball outs as he was in missing bats in 2017. He added a slider to his arsenal and it might end up being his best secondary offering, with plus potential. He still throws an effective curveball as well. He has feel for a changeup, giving him the chance for a very effective four-pitch mix. He's around the strike zone more than enough to remain a starter.

Duplantier was meeting the challenge of the upper levels well before he was shut down. His combination of athleticism, stuff and command point to a ceiling of a frontline starter, especially if he can put those durability concerns in his rearview mirror.

2017

Scouting grades: Fastball: 60 | Curveball: 55 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 50 | Overall: 55

Duplantier missed his sophomore season at Rice with a shoulder injury, but he bounced back with a strong junior season, landing in the third round of the 2016 Draft. He threw just one inning in his pro debut as elbow soreness and a heavy college workload forced him to be shut down, but he bounced back in his first full season, earning a promotion and going to the Futures Game.

Duplantier is athletic and physical, with the repertoire to succeed in a rotation. He can throw his sinking fastball in the 91-96 mph range with excellent extension, making it appear to get on hitters more quickly. He has a power curve that flashes plus when he stays on top of it. When he doesn't, it gets slurvy. He also shows a good feel for a changeup.

The track record for Rice pitchers is not so good in the professional ranks, and Duplantier already has arm trouble on his resume, but he has put those woes behind him and answered a lot of critics who worried about his durability as a starter.
