A two-way standout in high school who graduated from Cardinal Newman in West Palm Beach, Florida, Hugus headed to Cincinnati for college ball. As a freshman, he served as a reliever and played the left side of the infield, then was a relief pitcher only as a sophomore. Despite less than inspiring numbers, Miami offered him a spot when he entered the portal shortly before he pitched very well out of the bullpen in the Cape Cod League. Given a chance to start in his first year with the Hurricanes, he’s run with it, beginning the season as the Saturday starter but taking over Friday nights in March.
While Hugus may not blow anyone away with pure stuff, he has the chance to have a legitimate four-pitch mix as a starting pitcher at the next level. He typically sits around 92-93 mph with his fastball, topping out at 95-96 mph at times, but hitters don’t square it up. Right now, his mid-80s slider is his go-to pitch, and the Hurricanes call it a lot. He added a slower mid-70s curve on the Cape, and while it may seem like more of a get-me-over kind of pitch, some scouts think it actually has a better chance to become an out pitch than the slider. He does have a mid-80s changeup, but he doesn’t use it often.
Hugus struggled with command at Cincinnati but has done a much better job finding the strike zone as a starter with Miami. A decent athlete, he should be able to repeat his delivery and be a solid strike-thrower in the future. He reminds some in the area of former Hurricanes starter Gage Ziehl, who was taken in the fourth round of last year’s Draft by the Yankees.
