Scouting grades: Fastball: 60 | Slider: 45 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 45 | Overall: 45

It’s hard not to notice Baumann when he’s on the mound, with the kind of 6-foot-8 frame that makes any scout take notice. It comes with plenty of arm strength, which was on display at summer showcase circuit events like PDP League and Perfect Game’s All-American Classic. While he didn’t pitch well at USA Baseball’s National High School Invitational early this spring, his name was floating up as he performed better as the spring wore on at Hagerty HS in Florida.

Big and strong with that extra-large frame, Baumann has plenty to dream on. In shorter stints over the summer, Baumann was up as high as 97 mph with his fastball, but he’s generally around 93 mph with his heater that features some sink. Right now, his changeup is his best secondary offering, thrown up to the mid-80s with decent fade and sold with arm speed. His breaking ball is behind and inconsistent, a slider that can be good at times, but it gets slurvy and lacks bite to be an out pitch, though some scouts believe he has enough feel for spin for it to be a decent option in the future.

Baumann’s arm action can get long and he needs to work on refining his delivery, with mechanical inconsistencies leading to spotty command at times. Even with the question marks, though, his size and raw ingredients could have teams interested in drafting him away from his commitment to Central Florida.

2024

Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Slider: 45 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 45 | Overall: 40

Hagerty High School in Florida has produced a fair amount of big leaguers over the past dozen years, from Zach Eflin on the mound to Ryan Mountcastle, Vaughn Grissom and Riley Greene at the plate. Baumann hopes to follow Eflin’s path after putting his name on the map at MLB’s PDP League and Perfect Game’s All-American Classic on the summer showcase circuit, then performing well as his senior season wore on, landing him in the fourth round of the 2023 Draft, where the Braves gave him an over-slot deal of close to $750,000 to sign him away from Central Florida.

The 6-foot-8 Baumann made just one appearance with full-season Augusta after signing, so the Braves will really get a sense of what they have on their hands in 2024. With his huge frame, it’s easy to dream on more velocity as he tended to sit around 93 mph with his sinking fastball, though he could reach back for 96-97 mph at times. He has a changeup that flashes at least above-average, a mid-80s offspeed offering with fade that he sells well. He’s worked to improve his slurvy breaking ball, a slider that has lacked out pitch bit at times, but there is some feel to spin he can work with if he can continue to firm it up.

Not surprisingly for someone his size, Baumann’s arm action can get long and he’ll need to work hard to keep his delivery in sync so he can find the strike zone consistently. If he can do that, he has the ingredients to be a starter long-term, but it’s going to take some time.
