Some baseball players are athletic compared to their peers, and others take it to another level. Overn fits the latter category. He was not just a high school baseball player, but also a football player and a track star, so gifted that he was recruited to USC to play outfield for their baseball team and wide receiver for their football squad. He left the gridiron after one season to focus on baseball, and he was drafted by the Orioles as a sophomore in 2024, signing for an above-slot bonus of $850,000. He played his way to Double-A in his first full season, then got dealt from the Orioles to the Rays in December as part of the Shane Baz trade.
It should come as no surprise, given his background, that speed dominates Overn’s profile. Some scouts considered him an 80-grade runner in the Draft, and those wheels can make him a menace on the bases and an elite defender in center field. He stole 64 bases in 114 games while only being caught eight times last year, and he has earned high marks for his instincts, reads and routes in addition to his pure speed in the outfield. He’s a no-doubt center fielder, even with an arm that doesn’t grade out as well as the game’s best out there.
The question is what Overn can do at the plate. Evaluators believe there’s some power in his 6-foot frame and left-handed swing, but he’s been more of a slasher who tries to be a tough out, find his way on base and let his speed do the rest. If he can make enough impact to turn his base hits into doubles and triples, with the occasional homer, he could be a more well-rounded player. (Perhaps he could simply repeat whatever he did for High-A Aberdeen against the Rays’ Bowling Green affiliate last summer, when he went 9-for-22 with four homers, a double and five steals in five games to earn an immediate promotion to Double-A.) He has the traits of a high-floor regular, but the Rays will give a player with his speed and defensive ability every chance to let the rest of his game catch up.

Athletic enough to play four sports as a California prepster, Overn played wide receiver as a freshman at USC before giving up football to focus on baseball in 2023. He was one of the fastest players in his Draft class a year later, starring in the Cape Cod League before the Orioles took him in the third round and signed the Draft-eligible sophomore for an over-slot bonus of $850,000. He then enjoyed a fine debut, producing an .865 OPS and 16 steals over 21 games, finishing the year at High-A Aberdeen. He hit .249/.355/.399 with 13 homers and 64 steals in 114 games at High-A and Double-A in his first full season before being traded to the Rays in the offseason as part of the Shane Baz deal.
Overn’s carrying tool is that speed, which some scouts hung an 80 grade on coming out of the Draft. Those wheels make him a legitimately disruptive threat on the bases and a double-plus defender in center field, where he uses good reads, instincts and body awareness to run down balls other defenders can’t. Overn’s athleticism allows him to make such an impact with his glove and feet it’ll likely keep him in center long-term despite what might be a tick-below-average arm.
Overn’s potential impact at the plate is more of an open question. He’s a left-handed slasher type in the classic table-setter mold who needs to focus on putting the ball in play, getting on-base and making things happen. Though he can occasionally drop the barrel, his slug should come from turning singles into doubles and doubles into triples rather than trying to hit homers. His glove-first speedster profile is not unlike his former organizationmate Enrique Bradfield Jr.. Now with Tampa Bay -- an organization that values speed and defense highly -- the progress Overn makes offensively will determine whether he develops into a high-floor regular or more of a bench player in the Reggie Willits mold.

Overn was known as one of the best athletes in Southern California during his high school days, when he played four sports. He went just up the road to play both football and baseball at USC. He gave up football to focus on baseball in 2023 and jumped into the Trojans’ starting lineup, showing off that athleticism on both sides of the ball and finishing with a .932 OPS before trying out for Team USA and playing in the Cape Cod League. He didn’t perform as well during his Draft-eligible sophomore season, though he did post a .947 OPS with nine steals back in the Cape before the Orioles took him in the third round and signed him with an over-slot bonus of $850,000.
Overn was one of the fastest players in the Draft class, with some scouts hanging an 80 on his speed. He’s a legitimate basestealer and that speed plays in center field, where he combines his wheels with good reads and routes to be a premium defender with an average arm. He’s not just athletic; Overn has outstanding body awareness and control.
A left-handed hitter, Overn knows what his offensive game is. He’s used a handsy-slasher type of swing, but it’s vastly improved from his high school days, when he would lack fluidity and crash on his front side. There’s actually some raw pop there, but he focuses on drawing walks and putting the ball in play, with his speed helping his hit tool. He’s the type of table-setter that’s hard to come by, but scouts were tempered in their enthusiasm because of a lack of impact at the plate. Now he’ll try to climb the ladder of an organization who has a similar player, 2023 first-rounder Enrique Bradfield Jr., a year ahead of him.
