Scouting Report

Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 50 | Run: 40 | Arm: 45 | Field: 45 | Overall: 45

A native of North Dakota, Young began his collegiate career at Neosho County Community College before transferring to Indiana State. After two solid seasons there, he signed as a senior with the Cardinals for $3,000 in the 37th round of the 2016 Draft. He went from organizational filler to interesting prospect by hitting 17 homers across two levels of A ball in his first full season, then reaching Double-A in his second and hitting 21 more home runs. After impressing in the Arizona Fall League, he was sent to the D-backs as part of the package received for Paul Goldschmidt.

The stocky infielder is mostly all bat, but it's a good one. He's shown the ability to make consistent hard contact from the right side of the plate with at least solid average power. Young hits a ton of fly balls and showed his power by smashing a dozen home runs in Palm Beach in 2018, an extreme pitcher's park. While he doesn't walk a ton, he did cut his strikeout rate down considerably in 2018 and showed a much better overall approach in the AFL.

Young has seen time defensively at three infield positions and a little time in the outfield corners. With below-average speed and a fringy arm, his best bet to be a regular will be at second, with a career as an offensive-minded utility type a possibility.
